The TFI Marine SeaSpring is a novel polymer product designed for use in long-term mooring applications. The
SeaSpring works by changing the mooring system’s behaviour, with the mooring system designer choosing
suitable SeaSprings to achieve a behaviour which delivers the benefit they are looking for (e.g., load reduction,
fatigue reduction, reduced environmental impact). A suitably chosen SeaSpring can significantly reduce the
maximum mooring loads at extreme design load conditions (e.g., by 50% in challenging environments), reducing
the required MBL of all components in a mooring system. A suitably chosen SeaSpring can greatly reduce the
fatigue experienced by the mooring system in operational scenarios (e.g., by 30-50%), extending the lifetime of
the mooring system components. SeaSprings can enable a taut mooring system to be deployed in shallow water
depths, greatly reducing environmental impact (e.g., seabed impact and footprint).
The SeaSpring itself is protected by a range of patents covering aspects of the design, operation, and
manufacture. At its core, it is a polymer spring designed by TFI Marine to deliver a designed behaviour under
applied loads that has been developed through extensive R&D program, qualification, and certification
processes.
This White Paper has been prepared to demonstrate, through examples, how the TFI Marine SeaSpring can be
utilized to improve mooring systems in Floating Offshore Wind (FOWT) applications
