The TFI Dynamic Tether combines the features of the Elastomer and Thermoplastic Spring components to provide a comprehensive mooring solution ideal for marine applications. The tensile elastomer component provides a low stiffness response that withstands repeated low-force events (>3.5 million cycles per year, typical wave movements in one year), while the compressive Hytrel bellow provides high-load storm protection with minimal weight (smooth transition over 2-3 orders of load magnitude).
When combined, the system is designed such that the compressive spring will engage upon a defined extension of the elastomer, delivering an overall load and fatigue reduction of greater than 70%. The parameters of each component can be altered to deliver the desired stress-strain response from the system, as per the requirements of the floating structure.
Our dynamic mooring tether has been deployed in Galway Bay, off Ireland’s Atlantic coast, currently managing a mooring load of 50kN, however, all elements of the system are scalable to manage loads of up to 3,000kN.
Our Dynamic Tether delivers lower peak, mean and standard deviations in tension, allowing for a smaller footprint, and better wave motion capture than alternative mooring solutions. They are also more environmentally friendly by delivering low noise pollution and reduced seabed scouring.
